THE GOTHICIZATION OF THE HARRY POTTER SERIES: THE PROGRESSIVE TRANSPOSITION OF THE GOTHIC INTO THE FILMS Abstract In this paper I shall argue that the Harry Potter cinematographic adaptations of J. K. Rowling's novels gradually enacts a transgeneric crossing of the Gothic into the genre of the fantastic. Specifically, by utilizing Robert Mighall's argument that the "Gothic is a process, not an essence; a rhetoric rather than a store of universal symbols", I shall argue that such a transposition is progressively achieved by means of the representation of an imagery clearly recalling Gothic settings, figures and atmospheres, and through the use of a series of thematic preoccupations that are usually present in Gothic texts. According to the critic Robert Mighall, "The Gothic is a process, not an essence; a rhetoric rather than a store of universal symbols; an attitude to the past and the present, not a free floating..

The Social and Political Life of a Relic: The Episode of the \u3ci\u3eMoi-e-Muqaddas\u3c/i\u3e Theft in Kashmir, 1963-1964

The present article is focused on the relationship between a sacred object: the moi-e-muqaddas (the Prophet’s hair), housed in the Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir, and the Kashmiri Muslim community. The relic, which was stolen from the shrine on 27 December 1963, lead to a massive protest in the Kashmir valley and in other parts of the subcontinent, as people demanded its immediate recovery. Such thefts, which have been reported from across the world and across centuries, point to the extreme value of the relics, and the additional value they generate when they are stolen. Similarly, the Hazratbal relic theft became a vehicle for reifying certain Kashmiri Muslim social and political sentiments. The incident also catapulted the issue of Kashmir’s political accession, which emerged in 1947 at the time of the partition of the subcontinent, to the forefront, alarming the Indian government. The Hazratbal relic episode is also reflective of the role of religious ideas and symbols in political action in South Asia

This project represents my progress and achievement this year in Berklee Master in Scoring for Film, TV and Video Games. This paper records my process of research, choosing the project, composition and my personal experience. Each course I took in SFTV, whether it is composition for different genres, MIDI sequencing, conducting, orchestration or sound designing, have provided me strong support in completing this project. I’ve been through some difficulties working on this project, but good things are a long time in coming. In this special circumstance which COVID-19 swept across the world, college was closed and the recording in London Air Studio was delayed to an undetermined date, I am looking forward to the final recording of this Master program and pray for peace and health for mankind.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-scoring/1152/thumbnail.jp

La pastorale dans le jeu des langues

    Get PDF

Enigma: Aspects of Multimodal Inter-Semiotic Translation

    Get PDF
Commercial and creative perspectives are critical when making movies. Deciding how to select and  combine elements of stories gleaned from books into multimodal texts results in films whose modes of image, words, sound and movement interact in ways that create new wholes and so, new stories, which are more than the sum of their individual parts. The Imitation Game (2014) claims to be based on a true story recorded in the seminal biography by Andrew Hodges, Alan Turing: The Enigma (1983). The movie, as does its primary source, endeavours to portray the crucial role of Enigma during World War Two, along with the tragic fate of a key individual, Alan Turing. The film, therefore, involves translation of at least two "true" stories, making the film a rich source of data for this paper that addresses aspects of multimodal inter-semiotic translations (MISTs). Carefully selected aspects of tales based on "true stories" are interpreted in films; however, not all interpretations possess the same degree of integrity in relation to their original source text. This paper assumes films, based on stories, are a form of MIST, whose integrity of translation needs to be assessed. The methodology employed uses a case-study approach and a "grid" framework with two key critical thinking (CT) standards: Accuracy and Significance, as well as a scale (from "low" to "high"). This paper offers a stretched and nuanced understanding of inter-semiotic translation by analysing how multimodal strategies are employed by communication interpretants.
